This tour includes a superb mix of rural cycling with stays at inns that are within an easy stroll of the sophisticated “downtowns” of Stowe and Montpelier. Begin at The Stowe Inn, a wonderfully comfortable country inn overlooking the Waterbury River. Come early and take a short walk to the galleries, shops and craft stores that flourish in the village of Stowe.
Monday takes you along the North Branch River, past beautiful Lake Elmore to Montpelier, the smallest “capitol city” in America. It is a surprisingly sophisticated small town whose intimate size, historic neighborhoods, and diverse community make it a wonderful place to explore. In addition to the capitol buildings and State House, Montpelier is alive with craft shops, artisan galleries and superb restaurants. Your two nights here you are a guest at the Inn at Montpelier, a marvelously comfortable and elegant inn built in a classic Federal design that features an extravagant wraparound porch, perfect for relaxing in the evenings after dinner.
The cycling continues with a ride that enjoys distant views of Camel’s Hump and the Worcester Range as you parallel the Mad River, visit picturesque Waitsfield, stop for lunch at the Warren Country Store and enjoy spectacular views of the Green Mountains. Wednesday, enjoy a guided tour of the Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks on the way past Adamant and Sabin Pond to your destination in Greensboro. In Greensboro, you have two delightful nights at the Highland Lodge, a supremely welcoming and relaxing family-run inn with sweeping views over Caspian Lake. From here, cycling includes a visit to the Cabot Creamery, “makers of the best cheddar in the world”, an optional ride to Marshfield, and the chance to explore some quintessential old-fashioned Vermont country stores.
