The area of Vermont visited on this tour is defined by small villages with white steeples rising above tree-lined streets, peaceful valleys, and winding country roads. Crisscross numerous brooks, streams and rivers, and pass through many of the local historic covered bridges that are concentrated in this region.
This tour features two great inns. The Inn at Cranberry Farm is located on 60 rolling acres of lovely hillside overlooking the Williams River. There is a relaxing common room with a large stone fireplace, and the comfortable rooms are beautifully furnished. The "country elegant" Windham Hill Inn is located in a spectacular rural setting that includes lovely wooded paths, stone walls bordered by flowers, and long views into the surrounding valleys. This exquisite retreat recently featured in New York magazine as one of Vermont's premier inns, and has often been likened to an elegant English country house hotel. And, after your day's cycling, enjoy the heated swimming pool before being treated to award-winning cuisine.
On rides, visit the village green in Chester, explore the Old Rockingham Meeting House (built in 1787), and wander the aisles of the Vermont Country Store - "purveyors of all things nostalgic, practical, functional, and hard to find." Explore historic Grafton with its many restored homes, antique shops, general store, and the famous Grafton Cheese Factory where you can sample the "sharpest of cheddars".
In between all these villages are lovely stretches of rolling farmland with roads following along the West River, Saxtons River, Williams River and Cobb Brook. On Thursday, combine the biking with a hike up to beautiful Hamilton Falls, a spectacular 125-foot display of slides, pools, and falls - a great spot for a picnic and swim.
