This tour is based at one of Vermont's favorite inns. The Swift House Inn was once the home of Governor John W. Stewart, but in recent years it has been converted into a prestigious inn, with lovely bedrooms filled with antiques, comfortable common rooms, a sauna and steam room, and an intimate pub. Delicious dinners are served in the handsome cherry-paneled dining room, and your entire stay is always enhanced by the warmth and friendliness of your delightful hosts, Dan and Michele Brown.
Part of the pleasure of this tour is exploring the Town of Middlebury. Former grist and woolen mills now house Vermont’s best collection of sophisticated craft shops and galleries, including the Vermont State Craft Center, where you will find excellent woodworking, ceramics, furniture, jewelry, photography, prints, antiques and folk art. This is also the home of prestigious Middlebury College, with its distinctive campus, broad manicured lawns and handsome buildings fashioned from locally quarried gray stone.
Once you cycle across the Pulp Mill Covered Bridge, the town almost immediately gives way to wide fertile valleys dotted with productive dairy farms and apple orchards. The roads wind through pastures and cultivated fields, while in the distance you are treated with spectacular views of the Adirondacks and Green Mountains.
Ride past the Morgan Horse Farm; follow the Otter Creek to Vergennes (America's smallest city); and have the option of riding out to beautiful Button Bay on Lake Champlain where you visit the Maritime Museum. On another day, pass by Shard Villa, an imposing "surely haunted" Gothic mansion, picnic on the sandy beach at Lake Dunmore, and take a short hike up to the Falls of Lana. You will surely agree that this tour combines all things that make Vermont such a perfect place to bike.
