This tour features one of Bike Vermont's most popular inns, plus superb cycling through lovely farmland and such classic villages as Woodstock, Quechee and Plymouth. At the October Country Inn, Edie and Chuck Janisse are welcoming and warm hosts, and will delight you with their creative cuisine. The inn is a converted rambling farmhouse with large comfortable common rooms and lovely grounds where you can enjoy an evening walk or take a swim in the pool.
Saturday’s ride takes you along the Ottauquechee River, past the handsome Lincoln Covered Bridge and into Woodstock. Often described as one of the prettiest villages in the country, Woodstock is renowned as an architectural showcase for early Federal-style buildings, and for its lovely village green, tasteful shops, antique stores and galleries and the fascinating Billings Farm and Museum. Cycle past the Taftsville Covered Bridge into Quechee where you can shop for crafts and pottery and watch the glass blowing at Simon Pearce's glassworks and retail shop.
Sunday’s cycling takes you along Pinney Hollow Brook to the Plymouth Notch Historic District. This tiny hamlet was the childhood home of Calvin Coolidge, and it was here that his father swore him in as the 30th President of the United States. The historic district has a number of interesting houses and exhibits, a beautifully restored church, a recreated general store, and the Plymouth Cheese Factory, which still produces a superb cheddar. From here, enjoy an optional loop that takes you past Amherst and Echo Lakes. Then rejoin the standard route as you cycle north along the Black River, past lovely Woodward Reservoir, and down along the northerly branch of the Ottauquechee River back to the inn.
Bike Vermont also offers special beginner biking clinics on this tour. See Biking Clinic for the Beginner for details.
