Mountain Biking in the Grand Staircase Escalante Introduction
The Grand Staircase Lower Canyons provide exploring, camping, and backcountry mountain biking opportunities so vast and picturesque that the rest of the world will seem to shrink in comparison. Between the Grand Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks, a series of brown, red, white, gray, and pink cliffs climb step by step on what explorer Zane Grey described as "a stairway to the sky". Ride mountain bikes among red-banded spires, sandstone goblins, slickrock valleys, and petrified forests. Overlook the Death Box Hollow Wilderness and the Dixie National Forest from a ride atop Hell's Backbone.
Escalante's jeep roads and lower canyons provide easy to moderate terrain, making it a perfect playground for newer riders. Most of the trails followed on this introductory mountain biking tour are wide enough to accommodate a support vehicle, providing you with ample opportunities to cut the day short or just take a brief break.
Rustic but comfortable cabins serve as the perfect base camp for a week out on the trails. You'll be reluctant to leave your new home-away-from home when your vacation comes to a close!
