Day 1: Arrival Bucharest Airport On arrival at Bucharest and transfer to Bran for your first night by car. You can visit Dracula’s castle. It had another famous resident now the Queen Marie of Romania, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria I. Day 2: Bran to Zernesti (22 miles/35km) First you cycle to Risnov, a medieval castle built by the Teutonic Knights. After your visit you cycle further on to Zarnisti, famous for its ‘Large Carnifore Project’. Day 3: Zernesti to the Plaiu Foii Mountain Hut (16 miles/25km) The scenery is out of this world and you can imagine that the Piatra Craiului (‘kings stone’) is one of the most challenging climbing areas in Romania. On the way you may have a stop at the ‘casa lupilor’ to see (take some cheese with you) two tamed wolves named Crai and Poiana. Cycle further on to Plaiu Foii where you can have a meal or a picnic in these very beautiful surroundings. Day 4: Zernesti to Fogarasch (38 miles/60km) Cycle around the Piatra Craiului massive, a national park with the highest concentration of bears and wolves in Europe, along a beautiful valley between two mountains to Fagarasch. Visit the pretty, recently restored Renaissance castle owned by the Hungarian Wojwodes who ruled Transylvania. Day 5: Agnita to Sighisoara (38 miles/60km) Over the next two days you cycle through quite a remote area with astounding views of the Transylvanian Alps passing numerous church castles and meeting only horse wagons, cows and sheep’s on the road. For the church castles you have to get the key in one of the farmhouses. You may see a gypsy street wedding on your way. You may visit Trappold Castle on your way, looked after by a German artist. Then you cycle further to Sighisoara, the birth place of Count Dracula. The town castle is the biggest lived-in castle in Europe and part of the Unesco Cultural Heritage. You may have a good Hungarian meal or game in your very good hotel or in the ‘casa cerbul’ the house with the deer antler, where normally the Prince of Wales is dining when he is around. Overnight in the town castle of Sighisoara. Day 6: Sighisoara - Medias (17 miles/35km) Today you have enough time to stroll around the town castle (UNESCO Cultural World heritage). Visit the 'church on the hill', the 'pearl of Transylvania', the medieval clock tower and fortifications. Have an Apfelstrudel on the church square before your transfer takes you to the Kokel Valley. Visit the old bishopric of Biertan, the most impressive church castle (UNESCO World Heritage). Cycle via Mosna castle to Medias. Day 7: Medias to Sidiu/Hermannstadt (35/40 miles - 55/65km) Cycle to the castle of Valea Viilor or wine valley (Unesco World Cultural Heritage), the passing the ruin of Stolzenburg Castle to Sibiu or Hermannstadt (as it was called by the 12th century German-Saxonian colonists), one of the beautiful towns in Romania. Day 8: End of Tour Transfer to train station early in the morning and train to Bucharest and transfer to airport or take an optional private transfer to Bucharest. |
