Day 1: ARRIVAL TO LJUBLJANA Arrival in Ljubljana and your chance to explore the capital. Today you have your bike hand-over meeting and meet your representative. Main attractions: Slovenian capital, the old town center, and the lovely “fin de siecle” mansions, which are mighty fortresses above the city. Day 2: LJUBLJANA - VRHNIKA (25 miles/40km; 36 miles/58km with a detour) Tour goes across Ljubljansko Barje a large flatland and former marsh area surrounding the capital. Today the terrain in mostly flat.
Main attractions: a short walk into Vintgar gorge nature reserve remains of the world highest railway viaduct in Borovnica, Technical Museum of republic of Slovenia – there’s a great hunting collection and an exhibition on Titos’ cars. Day 3: VRHNIKA – POSTOJNA (22 miles/34km, 28 miles/44km with a detour) A slightly hillier day using side roads with some flat sections across typical Carst fields. You will also cycle through the nature reserve Rakov Škocjan where you can picnic.
Main attractions: some real Slovenia - away from main tourist routes and off beaten track. Day 4: POSTOJNA – ŠTANJEL (28 miles/45km, 34 miles/55km with a detour) Today is an easy route with one long descent but some small hills afterwards. You will have a possible detour to Predjama Castle. The last Slovenian knight once owned it. Learn about his romantic destiny as you walk around this fabulous castle.
Main attractions: Postojna caves - world famous attraction - so far nearly 30 million visitors! Beautiful lime stone formations, not forgetting to mention the unique “human fish”! Day 5: DAY OFF IN ŠTANJEL OR ROUND TRIP (18 miles/30km) Day of rest.
Main attractions: Štanjel, village - museum of well kept old houses. Wider area of WWI fights of Isonzo front: different touching monuments. Visit of local artist – painter in a typical Carst village. Day 6: ŠTANJEL – LIPICA (23 miles/37km) Today you cycle along mostly flat minor country lanes with only one longer but gradual climb.
Today your main attractions are the botanical garden in Sežana a stud farm in Lipica and an unusual but very interesting “war museum” set in a village tower of Lokev.
If possible visit the Lipicaner horses - known from Vienna Spanish riding school and even watch the show if lucky. Day 7: LIPICA – TRIESTE – KOPER (38 miles/60km) Today a long cycle downhill from the Carst high plateau to Trieste.
Today's main attraction is Trieste, which was once an important port with its worldly flair and atmosphere. All the world cultures have once left a mark in this city. You can visit the castle, cathedral and Piazza Unita central square. Then it is onto Koper which is an “island” town above the Adriatic. Day 8: Departure from Koper An easy return trip is possible by train to Ljubljana. Additional nights may be booked in Koper or Ljubljana. |
