Overview
Intrepid REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES Intrepid has forged a reputation running adventures that go off the beaten trail to discover a country, meet its people and travel in a way that is in total contrast to conventional tourism. They started with a trip in Thailand in 1989 and set a philosophy that was very different to anything available at the time. It seemed so obvious (to Intrepid’s co-founders anyway) that if you traveled to a new place you would want to become part of that place – you would want to have your senses immersed in the destination and leave your world behind. This philosophy and strong Responsible Travel principles, have guided the company’s growth and development over the past 19 plus years.
The Intrepid Style of Travel and Philosophy With a passion for ‘grass roots’ travel, sharing special places and introducing travelers to different cultures and ways of living, Intrepid small group adventures are a popular alternative to more mainstream travel options.
Group size – With a maximum of 16 travelers (and an average of just 10) on any Intrepid departure, after a few days it feels more like traveling with a group of friends than on a tour. It also means they have the flexibility to use an incredible variety of transport and accommodations that are simply impractical for bigger groups. Intrepid is more sensitive to fragile cultures too – they blend in rather than dominate.
Accommodations – Intrepid is fussy about where they stay, believing that the ideal accommodations should capture the magic of the places they visit. Standards depend on the trip style, but they always try to get close to the people and culture of a region. In cities, Intrepid opts for centrally located hotels, while outside of cities, they prefer friendly places that are chosen as much for the smiling faces of the hosts as for their facilities.
Transport – On most Intrepid trips, they use a huge variety of transport. They believe the journey should be a highlight of the trip rather than just a means of getting from A to B. Intrepid uses everything from conventional trains, planes and automobiles to the not so conventional local buses, riverboats and bicycles. They even use the downright unconventional bemos, songthaews, cyclos, rafthouses, elephants and camels. And let’s not forget explorations on foot!
Incredible Value No matter which style of trip you choose – and they have seven, so there is something for every comfort and budget level as well as those looking for an epic adventure to those more interested in a leisurely one – one of the first things you’ll notice about Intrepid is the value. And by value they don't just mean the price – look a little deeper and you’ll see they include lots of extras to make your trip special. Because Intrepid knows the best of what to see and do, they save you money by using your time efficiently. Intrepid trips are also usually run on a twin-share basis so there are no costly single supplements.
"Intrepid offers a first rate way for travelers to go to many places which would be either impossible or extremely difficult - when cost levels, facility of arrangements and local knowledge are considered. Keep up the fresh thinking and critical self review." Passenger: Wayne Sanderson Home Country: Australia Trip name: Road to Vienna Date submitted: 30 June 2006
"I recommend Intrepid Travel if you want to experience things how the locals do but also want to have a tour leader to rely on to keep things hassle free. Having done a fair amount of independent travel this group tour was one of the best experience I have had, partly down to the destination but mainly due to the tour leader who was fab!" Passenger: Jade Stutely Home country: UK Trip name: Road to Angkor Date submitted: 23 July 2006
"This tour had a variety of experiences from a sheep farm to the rainforest to the Great Barrier Reef. The diversity made the tour truly unique." Passenger: Mark Olin Home country: USA Trip name: Eastern Explorer (Australia) Date submitted: 05 January 2006
