Matt Hartell - Guide and Owner
A self-proclaimed two wheeled enthusiast, Matt cut his cycling teeth at home in the foothills of the North Carolina Mountain Country where he learned to wrench on and race mountain bikes. His backcountry expertise comes from a stint in Yellowstone National Park with the Student Conservation Association. He holds a Latin American Studies degree from the University of South Carolina and completed an internship with the Smithsonian Institute's American Indian Museums Studies Program then returned for another term to work for the Smithsonian's Center of American Folklife. Seeking to continue his love affair with Latin America and subsidize his deep cycling and outdoor addiction he moved to La Antigua, Guatemala and founded Old Town Outfitters. His intimate knowledge of Guatemalan history and culture, and infrastructure down to the footpaths and bike trails of the back country come in part from his studies and in part from his over ten years of experience living and working in the country.
| Luisa Sea – Guide and General Manager
Don't let appearances be deceiving… underneath the beautiful and charming exterior and packed into a petite frame Luisa is nothing short of fierce on a mountain bike and for her a hike up the 3,976m/13,045ft Acatenango volcano is just a walk in the park. Luisa splits her time between managing the shop and guiding trips all the while keeping her training up with her Guatemalan mountain and road bike teams. Born and raised in Guatemala City, she received her degree in ecotourism from the University of the Valley of Guatemala and has found her place at Old Town Outfitters to be the ideal way to manage a life dedicated both to her studies and her athletic pursuits.
| Juan Galich – Guide and Backcountry Chef
Juan is a lover of natural experiences all of which seem to inspire him in one form or another. Born and raised in Antigua, Guatemala he left home for a year to work in the United States as a sushi chef. After his sojourn abroad he moved back to the volcano studded valley of Antigua and rediscovered how blessed it is with mountain bike and hiking trails. In the spring of 2005 he decided to make the best of all worlds and come to work at Old Town. From barreling down the side of a volcano on his mountain bike to preparing the best food you’ll ever eat out of doors he contributes to our high standards of expertise and service here at Old Town. Playing his drums and singing at various local night clubs he adds to the charm of his hometown.
| Welber Jimenez – Guide
Welber’s ever present ear to ear smile is as contagious as his enthusiasm for adventure. One of our most senior guides he knows every possible Guatemalan adventure down to the last switchback in the trail and has the confidence and experience to make your trip absolutely amazing. His friendliness and love of life make him a great companion on your trip and a great cultural emissary who automatically endears himself and his group to everyone he meets.
| Erick Sicajan – Guide and Mechanic
After wrenching on bikes for over a decade growing up in his father’s bicycle repair shop in San Lucas, Erick decided he wanted to master riding as well as working them. What better place to do so than Old Town Outfitters! With an attitude of bettering both our bikes and our staff’s mechanic skills Erick joined the team in 2004. Since then this soft spoken but always smiling guide has been busy leading folks on great adventures when he’s not at the shop keeping our machines clean and healthy.
| Chela – Trail Dog
Born on the 3,000m/10,000ft high plateau of the Cuchumatanes, Chela thinks that the air down in Antigua at 1,500m/4,600ft is too thick and it sometimes gets to her head. Driven by the herding instinct she sometimes feels impelled to make sure the horses pulling carts on our cobble-stoned streets stay in line while passing our shop. On the trail is where she thrives. She can easily keep up with an all day bike ride at mountain bike speeds on the single-track or she can cover twice the distance of a hiking party as she scouts ahead and around the trail always alert and with the best experience for the group her mission.
