The actual bike tour begins around noon in the small village of Tujsk near the Baltic Sea. After biking through an area reminiscent of Holland, you arrive at the "Kadyny Palace Hotel" in the late afternoon. Tonight you’ll dine in the former vodka distillery of Emperor Wilhelm II. A short hike up the Elblag Heights affords spectacular views of the Baltic coastline. Then mount your bike and cross a bucolic landscape dotted with patches of dense woods and streams reminiscent of a bygone era - small farms, country lanes, and many storks. In Frombork, hometown of Copernicus - father of modern astronomy, you'll visit the impressive cathedral before lunch and leisurely biking back to Kadyny. Second night in the "Kadyny Palace Hotel". Day 3: Tuesday Kadyny - Kaliningrad - Elblag (0 miles)
At about 7:30 a.m. depart by bus to Kaliningrad (about 60 miles). After crossing the border to Russia, you’ll get a good impression of the countryside of the Kaliningrad region. The city, formerly named Königsberg, is struggling to emerge from its difficult history. Although a few testaments to its wealthy German heritage remain, today it is a city trying hard to overcome the soviet era. Kaliningrad affords a glimpse of modern Russia, a perspective of its German past and a very interesting contrast to Poland. You’ll return to Poland in the late afternoon by hydrofoil. Tonight you’ll stay in the "Elzam Hotel" in Elblag and dine in one of the town's premier restaurants. Day 4: Wednesday Elblag - Sople (22 miles)
Leave Elblag on a small boat, cross Lake Druzno and enter the Oberland Canal with its unique locks. The boat rides uphill in small rail cars before resuming its cruise on the canal. You’ll then bike along the water and through gently rolling untouched countryside. Tonight's hotel is the lovingly restored "Sople Inn" run by the very friendly Nowicki family. A swim in the nearby lake is generally possible as early as May. Day 5: Thursday Sople - Malbork (30 miles)
Today the itinerary takes you through the Oberland Lake District with numerous pristine lakes and beautiful woods. Around lunchtime you’ll arrive in Kamieniec and the ruins of "Finkenstein Castle", formerly the largest and most elegant castle of East Prussia. Napoleon spent the winter of 1807 here with his Polish mistress, adding to its fame. After a short train ride, you’ll arrive in Malbork where you will be staying in the "Hotel Zamek", located within the walls of the medieval Malbork fortress. A guided visit is planned in the late afternoon. Day 6: Friday Malbork - Gdansk (31 miles)
Today, leave the fortress complex via a small bridge over the Nogat River and cycle along its shore until you reach the mighty Vistula River. Its restaurant is reputedly the best in town. Day 7: Saturday Gdansk - (0 miles)
