About Timberline Adventures
In the season ahead, we at Timberline will celebrate our 24th year in an enduring pursuit of adventure, a reasonably significant milestone of longevity and survival for a small “ma and pa” group functioning in a world of giant, globally involved organizations.
We suppose this would be that moment for us to crow about how, in the course of these 24 years, we have become “the recognized leader in adventure travel” or “the world’s #1 Active Travel Company”, or whatever. We’re not quite sure who’s doing the voting. We never received any of the ballots, so we never even had the opportunity to vote for ourselves. The reality for us is that we’re just a little too self-conscious to claim such lofty status by self-proclamation. What we do hope, however, in the course of our longstanding love affair with what we do, is that we have distinguished ourselves as a different kind of company. For us, from day one to the present, and it will never change, we have sought to be defined by the unique, innovative and exciting content of our cycling and hiking programs. Bicycling and hiking—that’s what we do, that’s what we’ve always done, and it’s what we do best.
We know that multi-sport has been trendy for years—a day of cycling, a day of hiking, a day of horseback riding, rock climbing, rafting, maybe even a day of shopping or golf. Never, in our worst raging nightmare, will we ever trade a day of quality cycling or hiking for a day on a horse. Without a doubt, there are a lot of companies out there that have constructed these type of quality programs. What is striking, though, are the shrinking opportunities for those who, flat out, love to bicycle and love to hike. It is to those cyclists and hikers who are passionate about what they do that our program has been addressed in the past, and to whom our program will always be addressed in the future.
When we suggest that we want to be defined by what we do, we’re content to permit our programs to speak for us. Cycling programs like our 10-day Classics—Colorado, Canada, Big Sky, Oregon Coast, Columbia River, Canyon Country; our 9-day Ramblers; our Odyssey Series—Rocky Mountain Magic: Missoula-to-Jasper; our new Heartland programs in the Texas Hill Country and Bluegrass region of Kentucky; our Lewis & Clark Odyssey, a 3,500-mile, 45 day adventure of a lifetime ; our entire hiking program, that includes Grand Canyon: Rim-to-River-to-Rim, Canyons Classic, High Sierra Series,Yellowstone/Tetons Classic, and on and on—these are adventures unlike any that you will find elsewhere. These programs are innovative, athletic and adventurous—experiences created by cyclists and hikers for cyclists and hikers.
The content of our programs provides only a portion of our profile as an organization. From day one to the present, we always have been and always will be Carol and Dick, “ma and pa,” along with our kids, both real and presumptive (our family of tour leaders) until they outgrow us. It’s us you’re talking to on the phone during the off-season; and it’s us out there on the road and trail cycling and hiking with you—whining with you in the headwinds, the rain, and, yes, in the snow, and sharing the joy, exhilaration and utter sense of accomplishment that is a part of every aspect of our program. In other words, don’t ever look to us to boast about how many computers we have accumulated in our office, or how many reservationists and specialists we have added to our staff—it’s just not going to happen here and it never will be the means by which we measure our success. For us, we’ll only measure our success by the quality of your experience that you’ve shared with us. For better or worse, that’s who we are. We’re cyclists and hikers to the core. We’re also westerners, first and last; the West today, as in the past and as it will be in the future, is our focus. And we truly believe that you’ve never really experienced the West until you’ve experienced the joy and pride of doing so as the product of your own power and spirit. The cyclist and hiker alike, not only sees the breathtaking beauty of a region; each also feels the land, senses the crispness of the air, the sound of rushing waters, the scent of alpine flora. The West is our home and we feel that this land is special—its undulating terrain, its majestic grandeur, the challenge of its mountains and the incomparable peace and solitude of its isolated valleys.
Accept our invitation to share with us the beauty of this land and the incomparable experiences and excitement in the season ahead.
